What are Lice?

The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed, has 6 legs (each with claws for grabbing the hair), and is tannish color. Contrary to popular belief, lice and their eggs are not white! Lice don’t hop or fly, and they spend their entire life on the human head and feed on blood from the scalp.

Do I have to clean my house?

Lice live on your head, NOT on your couch, hats, pillows, etc. Scientists know that the minute a louse leaves the warmth of your hair for an inanimate object such as a couch or blanket, they quickly go into shock and start dying from the temperature change.

It can take up to 24 hours for the louse to die completely, but during that time they are not well and unable to start feeding & reproducing on a new scalp. This means minimal housecleaning is all that is needed.

We suggest simply washing and drying sheets and pillow cases (the dryer is very effective at killing lice) and sterilizing your combs and brushes with the Comb Cleaner! ™

Remember, it’s highly unlikely that anyone can contract lice from a couch, chair, hat, etc. Scientists who study lice are very certain that 99% of lice is contracted from head-to-head contact.

How did we get lice?

Your child most likely contracted lice from head-to-head contact with another infected child. The lice are then typically shared with other family members through snuggling. You will most likely never know exactly who gave it to your child, as lice is incredibly common in children age 11 and younger.

How long have we had lice?

The average person does not notice until 4-6 weeks after infection. Additionally, it takes this long for the person to develop an allergic reaction to the saliva of the bugs and begin itching.

Can my dog get lice?

No. Lice is species specific and only lives on the human head.

Do I need to spray my furniture?

The leading lice experts in the US are very clear that it is never necessary or advised to treat any inanimate objects in your home. Lice live on your head, not your carpet, couch or car. Suggestions to spray anything in your house should be met with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Does hair dryer kill lice?

A hair dryer is not recommended for killing lice because it has not been proven to work,and the temperature needed to kill lice could actually be dangerous. You need to heat your head to 130 degrees which is not sustainable or comfortable and could possibly be dangerous, especially on children.

Who should I notify?

Do I have to notify my school?

This is a personal preference. You are under no legal or moral obligation to notify your school. If you are confident that they will handle this information confidentially and not cause any undue embarrassment to your child, then you should notify the school.

Should I notify my child’s friends/close family?

Anyone who has had head-to-head contact with your child should be notified. This would include: grandparents, nannies/babysitters, friends from sleepovers, etc.

Can my child return to school the same day?

Yes! You will be lice free and non-contagious after your Day 1 application. You will need to go home and wash out the oil and then you can resume your typical day. For those treated in our center, Lice Nannies USA provides “Lice Free” certificates for your child to take to the nurse.

Erin was AMAZING! She treated the whole family within hours of calling! She was super knowledgeable and friendly. She made my 6 year old comfortable and able to be herself which is definitely a plus. I highly recommend this service. We tried over the counter treatment, but it didn't work. Erin was recommended by our child's teacher. When I called, Erin answered all my questions and was able to schedule us that day. She checked the whole family (4 of us) and treated everyone that had lice within one hour. Erin is very experienced and knew a lot about lice research and treatment. She was wonderful to work with and very kind. The treatment worked well and we were very happy. I would recommend her to anyone.

Erin was recommended to us by a friend and we've since learned that several other families we know swear by her. Count us in that camp, too: Erin is amazing!!!! She met us immediately when I called and took care of our entire family of 4 right then, providing take-home kit with the followup treatment to do at home. In addition to all of this, Erin also provided lots of useful, fact-based information about lice, how they are (and are not) spread, and what to do. It was a relief to learn that we didn't have to wash everything in our house or quarantine items for 2 weeks. Because lice can't live off of a human head long enough to reproduce it's not necessary to take all those extreme cleaning measures. We followed Erin's simple instructions and the treatment worked!! Erin was also very available for questions after the fact. I can't recommend her highly enough! For both taking care of the lice and for providing education and peace of mind, the cost was worth it. We will definitely go back to Erin if we're ever hit with lice again in the future!

If you have a lice problem in your household, I highly recommend the Lice Nanny!We found out my youngest child had lice, so we treated everyone in the family with over the counter lice shampoo. We went through that process at home, only to find out my youngest still had lice 2 weeks later. So, we reached out to Erin with Lice Nanny, and were able to get an appointment same day for the whole family. The staff who treated us were very nice and the whole environment and process was very easy and judgement free. They also found lice on my head since they check your entire household. We followed the directions they gave us to perform an at home follow up treatment exactly 1 week later for both myself and my youngest, and their product has worked wonders for us. I hope we don’t have to go through lice in our household again, but if we ever do, we will be using Lice Nanny.

We had a great experience with the Lice Nanny! We were surprised to hear that one of our kids had lice and we didn’t have any experience with it. Rather than taking the time to treat all of us at home, we called Erin and she got us in on the same day. We were in and out of their convenient location in about an hour. Yes, it’s not cheap but, it’s worth the piece of mind! Most of the traditional lice advice was not necessary to adhere to and we were able to move on to our normal activities right away. Lexy and Ethan who worked on our hair were professional and knowledgeable! Erin is also very quick to respond to follow up questions!

Having lice in the house is so stressful and put me in panic mode, but Erin calmed all my nerves and helped educate me on what really needed to be done to eliminate these pests.
